Tech Up or Pack Up!
Edition #10 - Adapting to new technology is a bare minimum for workplaces to succeed.
Hey everyone! Quick heads-up — I ran into a small tech glitch with my Substack settings last Friday, which is why you didn’t see the usual newsletter drop. While I did share Edition #009 yesterday (28th March), I didn’t want to disrupt the regular flow.
Also, Edition #010 is already up on LinkedIn since yesterday, and hence I am sharing it here too on the consecutive day, so that starting next Friday, both LinkedIn and Substack will be back in sync.
Thanks a ton for your patience — and for sticking around!
Welcome to Edition #0010 of People Please! My goal with this newsletter is to help 100,000 professionals shift from "people pleasers" to culture-builders.
I’ve been writing extensively about internal campaign design strategies—covering the do’s, don’ts, and all the steps an organisation must take while designing any internal campaign. If you’re looking to enhance employee experience in your organisation, I encourage you to explore the last few editions of People Please.
In this edition, I dive into the 6th pillar of internal campaign design, while the other five pillars are detailed in the previous editions.
Tech Up or Pack Up – The Uncomfortable Truth about Internal Communication Today
I’ll get straight to the point — if you don’t tech up, you will soon be packing up, at least when it comes to how your people engage, trust, and align with you.
We are not in the 1990s anymore. Today, internal communication is not about sending an email once in a while, launching a boring quarterly newsletter, or relying on an annual town hall to make people believe in the organisation’s purpose. It's about speed, connection, and relevance — all of which require technology, creativity, and data.
The Cost of Ignoring Change
Let me share a Be.artsy Case Study: A large Global Capacity Center based in India, pre-pandemic, relied heavily on traditional communication methods — print newsletters, static notice boards, sporadic leadership messages. Their attrition rates among young managers were alarming, engagement scores were dipping, and nobody wanted to take ownership of projects.
Post-pandemic, the HR team finally embraced platforms like Slack for real-time communication, Be.artsy surveys to capture sentiments instantly, and interactive videos to drive learning and upskilling. Within 18 months, they saw:
Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) rise by 14%.
Attrition in the mid-management segment drop by 8%.
Employee Engagement Scores shoot up by 31%.
Why? Because communication became two-way, authentic, and timely — powered by technology.
Case Study: Domino's India (Jubilant FoodWorks)
Domino's is a fantastic example closer home. At one point, their delivery and store employees, who make up the backbone of the business, felt disconnected from the leadership. Attrition was soaring. They revamped their internal communication strategy by integrating mobile-first platforms, gamification for training, and regular video messages from leadership (in multiple languages!). The results?
Reduced attrition.
Improved service quality (linked directly to customer satisfaction).
Sales saw a direct uplift due to better operational efficiency.
Their tech-enabled approach wasn't just an HR intervention — it became a business strategy.
The Modern Employee is Tech Native
A 2023 Gallup study showed that organisations with strong internal communication powered by modern tech tools are 3.5x more likely to outperform peers in productivity and profitability. Today's employees are not sitting around waiting for the next all-hands meeting. They are:
Looking for real-time updates.
Expecting direct access to leadership voices.
Demanding platforms that speak their language — visual, short-form, interactive, and mobile-friendly.
The Harsh Truth for CEOs/ HR/ Decision-Makers
If you are still treating internal communication as a checkbox function or are afraid to disrupt legacy practices, you're doing more harm than good.
❌ Employees won't read boring PDFs.
❌ They will ignore leadership emails.
❌ They will find purpose and connection outside your organisation.
The result? You will lose your best talent quietly and steadily. And guess what? Your competitors are already investing heavily in internal communication technology.
The Way Forward — What Tech Up Means
Tech up doesn't just mean buying the fanciest platform. It means:
Building a Communication Culture — open, timely, and frequent.
Choosing Tech that Fits — collaboration tools, video platforms, mobile-first apps.
Training Leaders to Communicate Effectively — short videos, Q&A sessions, honest storytelling.
Measuring Impact — regular surveys, engagement analytics, and action plans.
"Tech Up or Pack Up" is not just a Catchphrase
You can no longer run organisations with outdated communication systems while your people are living on WhatsApp, Reels, LinkedIn, and Slack.
If you don’t match the pace and style of how information is consumed today, you will lose the room, the talent, and eventually, the market.
In today’s fast-paced world, adapting to new technology is no longer a luxury—it’s the bare minimum for your workplace to survive and thrive.
